Zombie Blog

I feel like I have turned into a zombie.

I’m inarticulate, shuffling around, and have a strong hankering for brains.

In actuality, we’ve finished our first book, “From Here to There”. All it took was multiple 12 to 16 hour days in front of the computer, lettering, laying out, and at the drawing table. Totally worth it. I’m now waiting for a preview from the printers, and sweating that we’ll have copies at our first convention, coming up in a few weeks. It’s going to be really sad if we did all that work, trying to make a deadline (which we missed by 9 days, no further comment) only to be empty-handed at the con.

Anyway, I’m now back at the drawing table, since there’s no time to waste on “The Sound”. Here’s page one, version 2.0

The Sound, page 1. (2.0)

Free at last…

We did it. We actually did it. “From Here To There” is at the printers as we speak. I guess as you read this is more accurate. I don’t care….. either way we’re DONE. You know what I’m doing right now????…. I’m having one of those many beers I said I would (more to come).

I’ve never worked so hard in my life, but you know what? I’ve never been so happy about working so hard. All those 16 hour days have finally paid off. Silly me, I thought that after I wrote my story I was done. That would have been the case if I was just a writer, but I’m  also a partner in Resolution Comics. Guess what that means. That’s right, I’m not done ’till the comics done.

I never, ever, a thousand times no, thought that I would letter a comic. I mean come on, I don’t know how to do that shit. At least I didn’t. Scott - So, your gonna letter this right? Me - Uh, yeah sure. That’s pretty much how it went. Scott lettered one of the stories and I lettered the other three. Don’t get me wrong, Scott wasn’t slacking. He was taking care of a WHOLE LOT of shit that I still need to learn how to do, but I had to learn how to letter a comic in about a week. NOT easy. But I’m glad I did it.

So now I’ve taken a few days off and I’m ready to get back to work. You know what that means….. Thats right, It’s back to work on “The Sound”. I’m also working on a one shot comic. I don’t want to say too much about it yet but it’s gonna be good. You heard it here first.

I’d love to stay and talk more but my beer must have a hole in it ’cause it’s empty now. Thank God they come in 6’s.

OUCH!!!!

My head hurts, my eyes are bleeding and every part of my body aches.

If you think that I just got in a fight you are wrong. This pain comes from being hunched over a computer screen for endless hours. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel…..We are almost done with FROM HERE TO THERE. Thats right, you heard me.

It’s been a lot of hard work (and it’s not over yet) but it’s also been a lot of fun. We were lucky enough to have a lot of talented people working on this comic with us. We couldn’t have done it without them.

My plan is to drink so much beer that all of my aches and pains just disappear. Hey, I’m a poet and I didn’t know it. But seriously, I plan on drinking a lot of beer.

From Here To There

Hello the masses,

This is a long overdue update on the happenings of Resolution Comics. Scott and I have put THE SOUND on hold for the moment and are focusing our attention on a new project.

What is this new project called you ask? Well I’ll tell you……

FROM HERE TO THERE’

Its a 32 page comic divided into four 8 page stories. The concept is four different stories involving four different modes of transportation.

We are doing a car story, a boat story, a plane story and a train story.

We are trying to do an EC comics/noir sort of feel for all the stories.

I’m writing the car story (and I have a great artist named Stefano Cardoselli doing the artwork for it). Scott is writing and drawing the boat story and we are getting two other writers and two other artists to do the other two stories.

For those of you that are losing sleep over the fact that The Sound has been put on hold…. I promise you that we will be getting back to it soon and it will be out in the next 8 or 9 months (or longer if we get lazy).

One eyed double vision

Hi, I’m Brian, the guy that’s working with Scott to put this comic together. I felt it was time for the masses (or at least the two or three of you that are checking out this blog) to hear from me.

The way I see it is that Scott is pretty much covering all the details about the comic so that leaves me free to do the drunken rambling. And oh how I love to drink and ramble. But not necessarily in that order.

One thing I will say about the comic (because although Scott said he mentioned it in his blog I don’t see it) is that we decided on a name for it. Its called…. are you ready for this?… THE SOUND. Pretty catchy huh?

Now let me tell you a little bit about how Scott and I met.

It was 1991. We were seventeen years old…. and we hated each other instantly. Every time we saw each other it was a fight waiting to happen. Then one night…. Scott had a party at his house. A mutual friend of ours dragged me along to the party with her. I grudgingly went, prepared for the worst. But something amazing happened. Scott and I finally talked to each other and realized that we liked a lot of the same things, had a lot of the same ideas, shared a lot of the same goals.

And do you know what?… Because of that night a lot of our shared goals have been accomplished. At that time neither of us knew how to play an instrument and since then we’ve been in six bands together. Most of them VERY short lived but whatever.

We also (honest to God) had a sword fight that night. I still have the scars to prove it.

And now we are finally working on a comic together.

What started out as two young, dumb assholes became a lifelong friendship. So think about that the next time you hate someone.

Excuses, Excuses

One of the myriad reasons that I haven’t finished more of this first comic is that my attention is split between comics & music. Way back when, in 1990 or so, I started playing music and really loved the immediate satisfaction it gave: pluck a string, hear a noise. This was awesome! Previously drawing had been my main hobby/addiction/whatever-particularly drawing comic book style stuff. So, the years went by and I neglected my comic drawing, only to wake up one day (with a sore back) and realize I was in my thirties and had totally given up on my old dream of drawing & writing comics. In the meantime, most of my life had come to revolve around music. It still does, to a large extent. A lot of my free time is spent playing and recording music. It is in the recording process that I found a similarity to drawing comics. One has the idea, then “sketches it out”, then records basic tracks of drums, guitar, whatever and proceeds to refine and build up from there. This is not unlike going from thumbnail sketches to pencils, to inks, to colors, lettering, etc. They are both very time consuming as well. I’m sure that I’ll write more about these twin hobbies of mine as time goes on, especially considering that music plays a role in this first full length comci that I’m working on.

Another day, another dollop

I “turned in” the first few pages to Brian to look over and give his critiques, etc. and am now waiting for the next batch of scripts for pages. In the meantime, I took a stab at coloring the first page, since I had scanned it in to post it anyway. Here it is. I think it really points to us having to get someone who knows what they’re doing to color the thing. The Sound Page 001 colored

Lost, but not least

Okay, the pace is still crawling along. Where do people find the time to do this sort of thing all the time? The progress on the comic is crawling along at pretty much the same pace. I think a lot of it has to do with fear, to tell you the truth. Fear that it will suck, mostly. I told myself going into this that the first project that I do is definitely going to suck. Even so, it’s against my general sensibilities to purposely send out something that I think I can do better. So, you run into endless re-writes, re-drawing pages, etc. I’ve finally given over the writing reins almost completely to Brian. I’m only kind of loosely giving him story points. The story has really morphed a lot since the beginning as well. What started off as a bunch of funny stories from various tours I’ve been on now looks to be some sort of Romantic Comedy-think “High Fidelity” but with live music instead of records. That’s pretty good, huh? I can imagine myself pitching that idea somewhere down the road. Anyway, the artwork is npt what I would really like, but that is just going to have to wait. I figure the 3rd or so project will start to look how I’d like it to. I’ll be posting some of these pages soon so that I can start the process of finding a color artist.

Slowly, I turn…

Well, it’s been a little while since the last post. However, seeing as how no one has read it, no big deal right?

Since I last wrote, I went on a vacation/tour that ties in nicely with the still un-named tour comic. First stop was Wyomissing, PA for the recording of Comic Geek Speak Episode 300. This was truly an awesome experience. So many friendly people, all there to celebrate their love of comics and their connection through the podcast. It really was a shot in the arm for wanting to contribute to the comics community. I also got to see and talk to a couple of very talented indie creators, which was great.

After that, I spent some time in the birthplace of American comics; New York, NY. What an amazing city! And the pizza! Forget about it. I took a lot of pictures of buildings, for some reason. Probably imaging some day that I would need photo reference for my run on Amazing Spider-Man (that’ll never happen).

Then, the coup de grace, a week and a half long tour with indie rock juggernaut Still Flyin’. Classic tour. Scary, and fun. Lots of great shows, lots of drunken hi-jinks, lots of down time spent wishing you were home, lots of stomach aches.

I’m estimating two more weeks before I’ll post some pencilled pages of “the comic to be named”. Please, if anyone out there happens upopn my sad little blog here, email me a title idea.

Hello world!

So, I ‘ve actually started putting stuff up on the domain that I registered almost a year ago. I figured that “blogging” would be the easiest way to keep up with actually caring about a website, etc.

In terms of the comic, etc., the first project is going to be about a punk band touring the U.S. and the trials & tribulations of that kind of undertaking; including the crap that happens back at home while they’re gone. This, of course will be based on my own experiences and, to a much lesser extent, those of friends of mine. I just figured that “tour stories” are some of my favorite to tell in person, so it would make a good comic, too. My friend Brian Carr will be co-plotting with me, but I’ll handle the artwork. Though, I’m contemplating finding someone to color it. Who knows? We’ve got the basic story arc done, and have scripted the first few pages. The artwork is done for a few pages and the cover is done (except for colors), so I’ m rolling along.

One thing, though…I need a title for the dang thing! Email any suggestions to kidbenicia@gmail.com

’til next time.
